TURBOTVILLE -- By the time Warrior Run was ready to trade touchdowns, Shamokin already had a head start.
The Defenders found the end zone three times in the final quarter and a half Friday night, but by that time the Indians had already built a 20-point lead en route to a 39-20 victory at Defender Stadium.
"The kids needed this," Shamokin coach Dan Foor said. "We're an experienced coaching staff. We've had a lot of wins in our career. We've won championships. But this was good for the kids. ... They've been busting their butts and coming up on the short end a lot this year."
Brent Forbes, Tim Bousson and Lee Supsic all scored two touchdowns for the Indians (2-6, 2-2 Heartland Athletic Conference Division II). Forbes scored on runs of 16 and two yards as Shamokin took a 14-0 lead into the half. The 6-foot-3, 240-pound running back only got three carries after the break, but he finished the night with 118 yards on 19 carries.
"He's been taking a beating all year," Foor said when asked about Forbes' limited carries in the second half. "We wanted to try a couple of different things in the second half."
Bousson took the second-half kickoff back 80 yards to make the score 20-0.
"The blockers just hit their guys," Bousson said. "That was a big momentum boost."
"There seems to be a trend there with that third quarter," Warrior Run coach Chris Eiswerth said. "When we scored there (the first time), you take that kickoff away and it's 14-7."
The Defenders (0-8, 0-4), who had a rough first half, managing just 38 total yards, finally got on track on their second possession of the third quarter. After recovering a Supsic fumble at the Shamokin 24, Warrior Run went on its first scoring drive of the night. On 4th-and-3 from the 17, quarterback Garrett Moser found Ian Adam -- who had come out of the backfield -- all alone down the right sideline and hit him for a 17-yard scoring pass.
"The kids threw and caught the ball very well," Eiswerth said. "Offensively, the guys made some plays."
Warrior Run would then force an Indians punt and drive to the Shamokin 27, but Moser was intercepted by Ryan Burns. It was one of six turnovers on the night for the Defenders.
Bousson would score Shamokin's next touchdown on an 11-yard pass from Supsic with 7:48 left in the game to make the score 27-7. The Indians would score again on their next possession as Supsic scrambled 26 yards on a QB keeper for another touchdown.
Warrior Run got the score to 33-14 with 4:08 to go on a trick play. Moser threw to wideout Devin Hoy, who was a few feet behind the line of scrimmage, and he found Michael Dowdy for a 15-yard scoring toss.
Supsic later intercepted a halfback pass from Austin Oberdorf and took it back 25 yards for the touchdown.
Oberdorf, who would finish the night with 82 yards on 18 carries, would rush for a 45-yard touchdown in the game's final minute to complete the scoring.
