COAL TOWNSHIP - One by one, Shamokin Area's seniors left the field following Friday night's 22-12 victory over Mifflinburg through a tunnel of their underclassmen teammates.
They exchanged high fives, low fives, forearm bumps and smiles, signifying their final home game at Kemp Memorial Stadium.
The final senior to leave the field - fullback Brent Forbes - had just played the best game of his stellar career.
In the most basic terms, he plain wore out the Wildcats.
A 6-foot-3, 245-pound brute, Forbes rushed 32 times for 265 yards, scored a pair of touchdowns on runs of 15 and 46 yards, booted one extra point, a 21-yard field goal and, for good measure, caught three passes for 31 yards.
His offensive output, 296 yards and 16 points, was more than the entire Mifflinburg team.
It was the largest part of a 469-yard, 27-first down explosion by the Indians offense, by far their best output of the season.
"We sort of tweaked our offense a little bit this week to use our personnel better," Indians' head coach Dan Foor said. "And I think we accomplished that.
"Our line did a job tonight, and Forbes, with 265 yards, that's a credit to him and the line."
And still, the Indians needed an over-the-top defensive effort that included three goal-line stands over the final 14 minutes to preserve the victory.
Mifflinburg reached the Shamokin 9 late in the third quarter before Heath Henley sacked quarterback Alex Vidunas, forcing a fumble that was recovered by Wes Tillet.
Early in the fourth, the Wildcats got to the Indians' 1, before losing ground back to the 9 and having a fourth-down pass in the end zone fall incomplete.
Later in the fourth, Mifflinburg had a first down at the Indians' 5, turning the ball over when the direct snap to Jeremy Rosborough went bad and Mark Knapick recovered for Shamokin.
"We had three goal-line stands, and they were all big," Foor said. "Defensively, we had a couple lapses that could have hurt us, but we made some big plays that kept that from happening."
The victory was the Indians' second straight, and provides them the opportunity to close the season with a three-game winning streak when they travel to Loyalsock next week for the season finale.
