Shamokin's Tillett in Reno final

RENO, Nev. - Shamokin Area junior Wes Tillett was set to wrestle for the 285-pound championship in the prestigious Reno Tournament of Champions wrestling tournament Saturday, and Brandon Pesarchick was wrestling for seventh place at 140 in the event, which features 86 teams from all over the country. Shamokin is one of four Pennsylvania schools at the event, along with Easton, Cedar Cliff and Pleasant Valley.

Tillett won five bouts on the way to the final. He pinned Boone Lambourne of Maple Mountain (Utah) in 43 seconds, Jim Short of Grandview (Colo.) in 49 seconds, and Josh Price of Borah (Idaho) in 5:47 in his first three bouts. He took a 7-5 decision over Luis Contreras of Madera (Cal.) in the quarterfinals, then pinned John Schupp of Vacaville (Cal.) in 47 seconds in the semifinals.

Pesarchick was a 15-6 winner over Cedar Cliff's Marcus Clement in his first bout, then had wins of 7-3 over Richard Lair of Poway (Cal.) and 10-3 over Frank Colom of St. Peter's Prep (N.J.) before losing on a technical fall to Easton's Mike Hartenstine, 15-0 in 4:23 in the quarterfinals.

Derek Shingara (145) did not place in the top eight but did post a 4-2 record in the tournament. He decisioned Pleasant Valley's 9-4 in the first round, then lost by technical fall, 15-0 (4:10) to Alex Elder of West Salem (Ore.) He came back to beat Cody Rife of Grundy (Va.), 8-5, pin Keith Lucero of Pomona (Cal.) in 3:07, and decision Dion Mueller of Buena Vista (Cal.), 10-2, before dropping a 10-2 decision to Logan Addis of Mingus (Ariz.).

Other Shamokin wrestlers and their records for the tournament were Dave Coller (103, 0-2); Dane Shovlin (119, 0-2); Chris Pauzer (130, 0-2); Lee Supsic (152, 1-2); Josiah Stahl (160, 0-2); Kegan Polastre (171, 1-2); Joe Shaffer (189, 2-2); and Mark Anonia (215, 1-2).

"For our first competition of the season. it's been a real eye-opener," said Shamokin coach Todd Hockenbroch. "Seeing competition like this is going to help us the rest of the season."

Retherford wins at King of Mountain

MILL HALL - Freshman Zain Retherford won the 103-pound championship and Travis Erdman was second at 140 for Line Mountain's top finishes at the annual King of the Mountain Wrestling Tournament at Central Mountain High School Saturday.

Retherford pinned Joey Byers of Delone in 4:40 in the 103 final.

Erdman dropped a 5-2 decision to Council Rock South's Matt Martoccio in the 140 final.

Spartans place two

MILLERSVILLE - North Schuylkill's Garrett VanDemark (171) and Jordan Shinkus (112) placed at the truncated Penn Manor Wrestling Tournament held on Friday night.

With weather threatening what would have been the second day of action on Saturday, officials made the decision to hold the entire tournament on Friday night. VanDemark took fourth place before losing to eventual champion Dylan Nick of Washington, while Shinkus scrapped it out for an eighth place finish.

with 42 points, North Schuylkill finished in 18th place of the team standings.
