Massey Virtual National Championship

Starting on Jan. 4, we kicked off a virtual tournament bracket in which teams will play in computer simulations programmed by Ken Massey, one of the mathematicians whose computer models were used to create the Bowl Championship Series rankings for college football in 1999. Massey is professor of mathematics at Carson-Newman College in Jefferson City, Tenn.

The tournament will be played in March Madness style, with a 64-team field, and virtual games played every day from Jan. 4 until a champion is declared on Jan. 9.

HighSchoolSports.net chose one state champion from each of the 50 states. USA TODAY then selected 14 at-large teams and seeded the teams into four 16-team regions that correspond to the regions used for USA TODAY's Super 25.
