FOUNTAIN SPRINGS - To start the second period, Shamokin 160-pounder Chris Henley turned to coach Todd Hockenbroch for advice. Hockenbroch responded with one word: "Neutral.''

With 14 seconds left in the 135-pound bout, Hockenbroch shouted to Josh Lahr: "Get another one!''

Another takedown, that is, because when the Indians control matches on their feet, good things usually follow.

Like a 40-25 Schuylkill League Division I victory Wednesday night at North Schuylkill.

The Indians (2-3, 1-0 D-I) won the takedown battle 24-8, and that's why they won seven of the 12 contested bouts - six with bonus points.

"We found a position we can dominate and keep a guy in the whole match,'' Hockenbroch said.

"It breaks guys, it really does,'' the coach added. "If you can stay on a guy's head and keep pushing the pace, it'll break guys.

"That's pretty much why we do what we do.''

Wanting the match on your feet is one thing, getting takedowns once you're there is another. Shamokin, though, attacked well, shooting for single- and double-legs from a variety of angles and set-ups.

"Wrestling on our feet, that's what we go over mostly at practice,'' Lahr said. "... If we would ever get beat on our feet, I don't know what we'd do.

"We condition real hard so we can stay on our feet for six minutes.''

Shamokin blitzed through the first four bouts, getting falls from Derek

Shingara (145) and Kegan Polastre (171), a technical fall from Lee Supsic (152) and a decision from Henley for a 20-0 lead.

Injury and illness took two starters out of North Schuylkill's lineup, so the Spartans (4-3, 1-1 D-I) had to move wrestlers up in weight to have a chance.

Garrett VanDeMark (189) and Josh Caddy (215) both bumped up and came through with falls for North Schuylkill.

Jordan Shinkus (112) added a pin and Kevin Piaskowski (119) earned a major decision to cut the deficit to 24-22. That was the closest the Spartans got all night.

"We wrestled well, and we bumped up again because that was the only way we had a shot at winning the match,'' North Schuylkill coach Dave Brown said.

"We need to get better on our feet,'' he added. "I'm happy. We're growing, little steps at a time.''

Shamokin, though, took three of the last four weights to clinch the victory. Having Lahr and Brandon Pesarchick (140) - a pair of sixth-place state medalists last season - in the last two bouts allowed Shamokin to breathe easier.

Lahr piled up seven takedowns in a 16-5 major decision over Scott Houser.

It wasn't easy. Houser defended well, but Lahr lifted Houser's leg above his head numerous times, got him off-balance and scored.

"When there's 14 seconds left, there's going to be a time where he might need a takedown to win,'' Hockenbroch said. "And just to keep them working. I don't want these guys coasting into the end of a match.''

Pesarchick then capped the night with a first-period fall, using tight armbars to pin Quinton Boyer in 1:48.

"Tonight's probably the best we've wrestled this year,'' Hockenbroch said. "We've had some tough dual meets in the last couple days (losses to Warrior Run and Lewisburg), and we didn't look real good.

"Tonight is seemed like we sort of came (ready), which is good because the league tournament is right around the corner (Friday and Saturday.).''
