Shamokin knocks off Mount Carmel

MOUNT CARMEL - Derek Shingara says he has one style of wrestling: "to be relentlessly agressive."

He was all of that Thursday, and Shamokin fans are used to that from the two-time state qualifying senior.

But so were a lot of other Indian wrestlers, including sophomore Josiah Stahl, who scored a stunning upset, as the Indians took most of the close bouts to knock off rival Mount Carmel 32-25.

Shamokin (4-3) won eight of the 12 contested bouts, but Shingara delivered the only pin for the Indians, and it pretty much sealed the meet. Mount Carmel (9-3), after trailing 20-6, had rallied for a 25-20 lead with four straight wins, including a pin and major decision. But Shamokin's Brandon Pesarchick, who may or may not have earned his 100th career win, depending on whose records you go by, put the Indians back in position with a last-second takedown for a 3-1 win over Dylan Hornberger at 135 pounds.

That cut the lead to 25-23, and Shingara then went out and pinned Mike Sinopoli in 1:29 at 140, putting the Indians back on top.

Lee Supsic clinched the win with a 3-1 win over Matt Zigarski at 145.

But in reality, the Indians earned the win with some huge wins at the beginning.

Pat Shinskie (152), Chris Henley (160), Stahl (171) and Kegan Polastre (189) opened the meet with wins for the Indians, all in bouts that could have gone either way.

"They won all those close ones at the beginning," Mount Carmel coach Randy Reidler said. "We had to win one of those."

Shinskie (4-3), who just started competing again at last weekend's Schuylkill League Tournament, got Shamokin started on the right foot with a 12-9 win over Doug Kraynak at 152, picking up a couple of late-period reversals to fuel the win.

Henley (9-4) followed with a 10-6 win over Meyrick Lamb (13-6), although the Indians were docked what could have been a very important team point when the official caught Henley taking a retaliatory, if slight, swipe at Lamb at the end of the bout.

Then came the biggest win. Stahl, a sophomore with an 0-3 varsity record but coming off winning a Schuylkill League JV title, took Mount Carmel sophomore Brett Przekop (19-5) down five times and gave up three neutral points in a 10-7 win.

Shamokin coach Todd Hockenbroch sent Stahl out to get a better matchup at 189 with Polastre against the Tornadoes' Sean McCollum, and it worked out better than he expected.

"He (Stahl) is a great kid, from a great family," Hockenbroch said. "Josiah works his butt off; I pick him up at 6 every morning to lift weights before school. I didn't know where McCollum was going to wrestle because he's been all over the place, and when we didn't win the coin toss, that didn't help. So I just went with what I thought would be best, with Kegan against McCollum."

Polastre answered with an early four-point move, taking McCollum to his back with a headlock, then fending him for a period and a half before another late takedown for a 6-3 win.

Mount Carmel got on the board when Derek Urbanavage pinned Joe Shaffer with 13 seconds left in the match at 215, but Shamokin heavyweight Wes Tillett beat Ahmad Abuomar for the second time in five days, 7-4, before the teams traded forfeits at 103 and 112.

"We knew Polastre and Tillett would be tough, so we needed one of those other wins," Reidler said.

Tom Stief earned a tough 8-4 win over Dane Shovlin at 119 to get Mount Carmel's rally started. Shane Wondoloski beat Chris Pauzer 11-0 at 125, and Nick Dusendschine pinned Zach Yost, who was wrestling for injured Josh Lahr at 130, setting up the Hornberger-Pesarchick bout in a rematch of their Schuylkill League final, which Pesarchick won 6-2.

This time, each wrestler had an escape, Hornberger in the second period and Pesarchick in the third, and it looked like they were headed for overtime. But on a restart with about eight seconds left, Pesarchick (18-5) got the jump on Hornberger (19-3) for a double-leg takedown and the win.

"Dylan just got a little flat-footed at the end," Reidler said.

The Indians really needed the win if they want to get into the district dual tournament, with Tri-Valley on the horizon.

But of perhaps more importance is the status of Lahr, a sixth-place state finisher last season. He'll undergo surgery today for the torn left meniscus he suffered at the Schuylkill League Tournament.

"We really don't know what's going to happen," Hockenbroch said. "They're either going to stitch it up or take it out completely. If they just stitch it, he'll probably miss the rest of the season. If they take it out completely, he might miss four or five weeks. But they really don't know what they're going to do yet, as far as I know."
